Hey y’all,

I hope you are doing well.

Today, I want to chat a little bit with you about Western vs. Eastern medicine practices.

To give a little background, at the beginning of February 2020, I began to have several negative manifestations with my eyes and vision: sudden onset of redness, photophobia, grittiness, floaters, etc. I go into much more detail about my experience in my book, Lavender Heart Tea.

After seeing several upon several doctors and eye specialists, I was finally diagnosed with episcleritis.

What is episcleritis?

According to Western medicine, Episcleritis is a rather common inflammation disorder of the episclera of the eyeball that can present itself with or without an underlining internal inflammation disease. Most of the time, doctors will prescribe a topical or oral steroid to soothe (a.k.a mask) the negative manifestations.

Never really being a fan of taking medicine, I reluctantly agreed to begin the steroid treatment. I used the topical steroid as instructed by my ophthalmologist. After a week of being weened off the steroid as planned by my doctor, the negative manifestations came back with a vengeance. It was then I decided to take a more serious, front-center approach in my health plan of care.

This is how I decided to adopt Eastern medicine (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practices.

*This is a decision I made on my own for myself after having had more than 10 appointments with various ophthalmologists, optometrists, my own primary care physician, and several months of research into the disease itself. Western medicine is essentially medical practices and systems that approach treatments and plans of action to treat the symptoms of diseases of the body.

Eastern medicine or Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered a more ‘nonconventional’ practice (although practiced for more than 2000 years in many cultures) and approaches treatments and plans of action that are unique to the person and treat the root of diseases of the body.
